Wondering what happens when you come in for a pregnancy massage?
I know for some, it might be your first massage EVER. And you might be feeling vulnerable. It can be weird to think you'll be taking your clothes off and lying on a table!
I just wanted to say upfront- all I see is a beautiful, blossoming body. I'm not looking at unshaven legs. I don't care about your cellulite. Please don't ever feel like you have to shave/wax or apologise for your body. Come as you are.
When you arrive, I'll give you a new client form to fill in in the waiting area, which takes approximately five minutes to complete.
When it is your turn, I'll come and collect you from the waiting room and take you into the treatment room. We'll have a chat about a few things, like how many weeks pregnant you are, where you're birthing, your general health including any complications so far, and what you'd like from your massage.
Some women come in purely for relaxation; others have sore spots that need some attention.
Depending on what you need, I may do a quick postural assessment, which involves looking at you while you are standing. This helps me to see where you might be carrying any tension.
I explain to you what to expect during the massage, and I always ask whether you have sensitive skin so I can choose an appropriate massage oil.
The massage table might look similar to the image at the top of the page. This is my massage table set up for a third trimester massage. It has a sheet over the top, though I left this off for photo purposes.
I usually have candles burning, and relaxing music playing in the background.
I use a pregnancy bodyCushion, which allows you to comfortably lie face down; although if you prefer you can also have your massage in a side-lying position.
Some women like to talk during their massage about whatever is on their mind. Others are tired and just want to zone out..Don't feel like you need to chat with me so there's no 'awkward silence'- you do whatever you need or want to do to feel comfortable. You can take advantage of my naturopathic knowledge and ask me any health related questions if you like, or you can snooze.
Sometimes I use hot towels during the massage to wipe oil from your back and feet.
I end your massage 5 minutes before the end of your scheduled appointment time, to give you time to get up off the table and get dressed, at which point you come out to the waiting area and we process your payment.
Rebates for remedial massage are available with all funds EXCEPT Medibank Private and HCF.
Little people are always welcome if you need to bring them with you. I have extensive experience in making silly faces to keep small people happy, while massaging at the same time! I can also jiggle a capsule with one foot, wear your baby in your carrier, or even massage you while you hold your baby. I do whatever I can to make it work for you.
It can be a good idea to bring something to keep your smalls occupied, like a book, colouring in, or a device; and snacks.
